Summer Dyslexia Assessments

The University’s Disability & Dyslexia Service (DDS) are offering Dyslexia/SpLD assessments to returning USW students over the Summer months. If you wish to access an assessment, please complete our online screening tool as soon as possible. This will give you immediate on-screen feedback as to whether you need an assessment and how to start the process.

Disability Wales Internship Opportunity

Prospective Students

If you have a disability, long-term health condition, mental-health condition or specific learning difficulty such as dyslexia, extra help is available in the form of Disabled Students’ Allowances (DSAs). And these don’t have to be paid back.

If you have already applied for your main loans and grants, you can still apply for DSAs, download a form now from SFE.

If you haven’t applied for your main loans and grants don’t wait, apply online now.

Top tips

  • You should apply for DSAs now. It takes, on average, over 10 weeks from applying to getting support.
  • Remember SFE accept photocopies of disability evidence – you don’t need to send originals.
  • If you’ve applied for DSAs and been told to book your assessment appointment, book it now. As soon as you’ve had your assessment you can get your equipment in place, ready for the start of term.

Disabled Access to LRC

November 23, 2012

The implementation of temporary swipe card access to the Treforest LRC via an accessible side entrance for disabled staff and students has now been completed. Library visitors with physical impairments or mobility difficulties will now be able to enter and leave the building independently without having to call for assistance.

Job opportunity for visually impaired students - Temporary Trainee Campaigns Assistant

This is an opportunity to gain valuable work experience at the heart of RNIB’s campaigning for positive and lasting change whilst building our network of blind and partially sighted campaign supporters.

Help us organise events, gather information and deliver visual awareness training to decision makers. You will have a keen interest in the way Northern Ireland is run, as you will have the opportunity to participate in a unique internship at the Northern Ireland Assembly working with representatives from all of the political parties and staff at Stormont.

You will have had some experience of campaigning for change, along with proficient IT skills and the ability to communicate orally and in writing with a wide range of audiences.

Salary: £12,145 – £15,444 pro rata
Hours: 36 per week

Google Bold Immersion Program - 2012

As part of Google’s commitment to diversity and to providing opportunities to students from all academic background, we are pleased to announce the launch of the Google Building Opportunities for Leadership & Development (BOLD) Immersion Program – Europe for all current students expecting to graduate in 2014.

Up to 60 selected students will travel in September 2012 to Google offices in their country of studies for a unique opportunity providing participants with a rare glimpse into the online industry, career opportunities at Google, and valuable professional and peer networks.

This year the program will run in 4 countries:
Immerse yourself in a culture where great minds, cutting-edge technology, and smart business intersect to make a difference, each and every day.

  • Paris: 5th – 8th September 2012
  • Dublin: 12th – 15th September 2012
  • London: 19th – 22nd September 2012
  • Hamburg: 26th – 29th September 2012

Note: The first and last days of each session are dedicated to travel to and from the local Google office.

To apply, students must: Be a current student pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree.

  • Have an expected graduation date in 2014.
  • Be a current student in the country to which you are applying.
  • Demonstrate academic excellence in an arts, humanities, science, or business-related discipline.

Please note that the application is a multi-step process, which will include a profile registration, general Google application, and BOLD Immersion application.

The BOLD Immersion application consists of your CV, a short essay, and one reference from a professor, direct supervisor, or a mentor you have worked closely with in your school or community activities.

Treforest LRC: Alternative Access

June 8, 2012

As part of the Treforest LRC refurbishment project, work is currently being undertaken to improve the entrance to the library building, including installing a new lift. A temporary entrance has been established opposite Glynneath Building (G Block), but it is recognised that it is not accessible to all visitors. Therefore, an alternative temporary entrance is being provided (with improved ramps) on the other side of the building, opposite The Meeting House (Chaplaincy). A buzzer system will alert library staff when visitors require access via this accessible entrance and we will aim to respond within two minutes of the buzzer being rung.

Are you interested in the Skill Wales Ambassador Scheme?

The Skill Wales Ambassador scheme is aspirational. They are looking to recruit disabled students in Higher and Further Education, so that as role models, the Ambassadors will visit schools and colleges, or attend national events, to talk to other disabled people about their experiences and inspire them to overcome barriers and achieve their goals. Full training will be provided for all Ambassadors.

The scheme is already highly successful in England, providing an ambassadorial experience, and promoting the work of Skill, by reaching disabled young learners and encouraging them to believe in their hopes and ambitions. The Skill Wales Ambassador scheme will bring this success to Wales.

Skill will accompany you on visits and all travel expenses will be paid. They will also provide you with a certificate of achievement, great for the CV! This is a fantastic opportunity and one that could have a real impact on your future career development.

They’ll be on campus Tuesday 1st March, 12 – 3pm in the Glamorgan Conference Centre as part of the Experience Works Fair.

Skill Wales Ambassadors

Skill Wales is delighted to announce that the Millennium Stadium Charitable Trust has awarded a funding grant for the 2011 Skill Wales Ambassador scheme.

The Skill Wales Ambassador scheme is aspirational. We will recruit disabled people either in Higher and Further Education (or graduates) and provide training, so that as role models, the Ambassadors will visit schools and colleges, or attend national events, to talk to other disabled people about their experiences and inspire them to overcome barriers and achieve their goals.

Blind in Business Employers Forum

We are launching a new event, The Blind in Business Employers Forum, and we need your help! The forum is being held at RBS in London on the 28th of September 2010 from 5-7pm.

The event is aimed at raising awareness among employers of what blind and partially sighted individuals can achieve in the workplace and explain just how they do it. As part of this event we are looking to have 10-15 blind or partially sighted students/recent graduates who are interested in investment banking attend.

As well as taking advantage of this opportunity to learn more about the ways blind and partially sighted people conduct their work this will be an excellent opportunity to network. RBS will have graduate recruiters attending, recruiters from other large financial institutions will also be in attendance.

A draft agenda for the evening is as follows:

  • Paul Ryb (Equities Specialist – RBS) on the challenges he’s faced with his visual impairment and the support he has got since joining RBS

Google Scholarship

The scholarship is for students studying Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Informatics or closely related technical fields.

Recipients will each receive a EUR 7,000 scholarship and an all-expenses-paid networking retreat to Google’s Engineering Centre in Zurich, with workshops, speakers, panels, breakout sessions and social activities for meeting and share experiences.

The deadline for applications is 20th January 2011.
